A former karting ace, Gue is the son of experienced sports car team owner, Michael Gue. James started racing in go karts in 1991, winning four Georgia state championships and capturing two national wins through 1998.

He competed in World Karting Championships in 1999 and 2000, one of only four Americans to qualify in the past 20 years. He took sixth place in North American Karting Championships in 1999 and also raced in the European Karting Championships in 1999 and 2000.

He moved up to cars in 2001 as a member of the Skip Barber Racing School scholarship team and also made his Rolex Series debut.

Gue continued branching into different forms of car racing in 2002 by running two races in the Formula Mazda National Series, as well as four races in the USF2000 Zetec Championship and one Rolex Series event. He continued in USF2000 in 2003 and drove a Group C/GTP car in two Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) events.

Last season Gue drove for Miracle Motorsports in ALMS competition in the LMP2 class - winning two races and finishing second in the championship.
